SHOULD APPLICATION PAPER BE USED ON PRINTED GRAPHICS?

Within the SIGNMAKING Industry there are several “Raging debates” that might be overstating it, but one question that we do get asked quite regularly is “Are we better to apply APPLICATION PAPER to a printed graphic, even if we have LAMINATED it?” with reference to an excellent article that was written by Jim Hingst of R-TAPE Corp. he stated that ” Many installers believe that an application tape is unneccessary, in the vast majority of cases PREMASKING the graphic will make sure your installation is faster and easier, as well as providing protection for the GRAPHIC during shipping and handling”MASKING with APPLICATION TAPE, but more usually VINYL APPLICATION PAPER or “APP TAPE” adds to the stiffness of the VINYL GRAPHIC , which makes it easier to handle, should you need to reposition the VINYL LETTERING or LOGO, the extra body that the TAPE adds to the graphic makes it easier to Snap the film back off the substrate without deforming it! More importantly, when you are performing an installation in HOT WEATHER (Three days of the year!) a PAPER APPLICATION TAPE will prevent the GRAPHICS from stretching. The primary reason to use CONFORM 4075RLA or PERFECTEAR 575 APPLICATION PAPER on a DIGITALLY PRINTED graphic or VEHICLE WRAP, even if it has been laminated,is to protect the surface of the HIGH GLOSS CAST VINYL over laminate, as these can be soft and susceptible to scratching during the installation process, this is why The Vinyl Corporation recommend the use of the New Blue Pro VINYL SQUEEGEE TOOL, as opposed to some of the hard NYLON SQUEEGEES. The FELT SQUEEGEE FOR VINYL is always in the suggested VINYL APPLICATION TOOL KIT, this can be either the MACTAC FELT SQUEEGEE that has a dense construction, so it can be used on wet applications and still retain it’s integrity, also the ROLLER SQUEEGEE can be put to great effect during the application of VINYL SIGNS to larger flat surfaces.
